UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 7, 2021

After careful consideration by the F. Bayard Carter Society Executive Committee, we have decided to proceed with an in-person annual meeting in Roanoke, Virginia from October 21-23, 2021.

We will also allow for a virtual option for the scientific sessions and business meeting for those who choose not to attend in person.

  • With safety as a top priority, we will be implementing a number of safety measures for those who plan to attend the in-person meeting:
  • All in-person attendees and guests will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Masks are required at all meetings and social events
  • Scientific meetings and social events will be socially distanced and, where possible, held outdoors
  • There will be no hospitality suite this year – we apologize for the inconvenience

The current COVID-19 data in Roanoke show that 64% in the city and 72% in the county have at least one vaccine dose. The hotel has informed us that over 90% of their staff are vaccinated and they now have a mask requirement for all employees. The band, museum and catering staff have promised the same. We hope that with both an in-person and virtual option, and these safety measures in place allowing people to attend in whatever way they feel most comfortable, we will have a fantastic and safe annual meeting.

Please register for the meeting and the Friday night gala ASAP as we need to know the final numbers soon.

New: Schmitt Farm Saturday BBQ

We are excited to announce that we are adding a celebratory BBQ at the Schmitt Farm on Saturday afternoon at no charge to members and their guests! This will be outside (weather permitting) and will feature a local bluegrass band as well as delicious food. Families are welcome and the Schmitt Farm has plenty of animals and hiking trails to keep kids busy! To RSVP, please email John Schmitt so we can have an idea on the number attending. If enough people plan to attend, we can get transportation from the hotel (30 minutes from the farm).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Registration for this year’s meeting will be at a reduced rate of $200 and the gala at $130 per person! This is possible because so many of you have paid your dues and the fact that last year’s meeting was virtual with minimal costs. Please note that you must be up-to-date on dues to attend the meeting!

As you know, meeting registration includes the Thursday evening welcome reception as well as the scientific sessions. Dues help pay for the resident prize and other miscellaneous expenses and the gala costs pay for the venue, bar, dinner and music!

As it gets closer to the meeting we will continue to follow CDC guidelines regarding safety, though we are hopeful that vaccine rates will quickly increase given the current surge related to the Delta variant. We will keep everyone up to date.

Finally, we want to encourage everyone to book their hotel as rooms are filling up quickly!  Reservations. Here is another link regarding things to do in the area: Blue Ridge Bucket List!
